Kingship was a fluctuating thing in Scandinavia, especially when the old king died and left behind several teenaged sons. The eldest son would usually take the throne, and his brothers would almost invariably go off and raise a war band or army to take the throne from him. That, or go to Europe and raid for awhile to build up their reputations as a great leader and fighter and come back to win the respect of his people. In the harsh northlands, a strong arm was the first choice to lead.
